Make-up Tips from Janell Macek

Boy, have I got a treat for you today! Not only am I letting you in on one of the best make-up artists in our area, but there is also one heck of a sweet deal up for grabs for some very spokane wedding make-uplucky Apple Bride’s readers!

It was a great honor to add Coeur d’ Alene based, Janell Macek to my Preferred Vendors list a couple weeks ago. The second I looked through her portfolio and read about her experience and passion for make-up artistry I knew she would be a great fit for Apple Brides. The thing I really loved about her was that she has experience in both bridal make-up and fashion. She knows what’s trendy and stylish, but also knows what brides want. She can advise you on what will suit your coloring, what will work with your wedding theme and how to make your wedding make-up last…all day!

I asked Janell to give me some of her top make-up tips and tell us a little more about her self. Oh yeah…and…..

The first two brides who book Janell and mention Apple Brides will get 50% off their bridal make-up package up to $100!!!

Why did you decide to become a make-up artist?

It took quite a while and several jobs to finally find what I was passionate about.  Having always loved doing my own make-up, and constantly getting requests from my friends to do theirs it finally hit me!  Then after a night of discussing what I was passionate about with my husband, I realized the thing I was enjoying so much as a hobby could actually pay off as a career.  I truly enjoy making people feel beautiful on the outside, which I believe leads to a boost in one’s inner confidence as well.  I think as long as you are doing what you love it never feels like a job and you have a better attitude and outlook on life.

Where did you train? Experience?

For the most part I am self-taught but when I finally decided to make the jump of turning it into a business, I figured I would be more credible with some sort of official training.  I enrolled in an online satellite school called Elite Pro which is based out of Spain. As a mom I needed something flexible and at home and this fit both requirements perfectly. Upon completing the program we moved down to Florida for a few months where I was able to hook up with some models/photographers.  Doing several photo-shoots I was able to gain a bunch of priceless experience!

What is your make-up motto or philosophy?

Everyone is beautiful.  It’s not my job to make you beautiful, you already are.  It’s my job to enhance or bring the beauty out so the whole world can see what you already have.  My hope is that by the time I am done you will feel the same beauty that I see.

What type of make-up do you use?

I use anything and everything that I think works best.  I try not to limit myself to one product line because sometimes there are some great products out there that I might be missing out on or that do the job better.  My kit does mainly consist of NYX with a large smattering of M.A.C.  Currently my airbrush system is entirely made of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics.

What one piece of make-up couldn’t you live without?

I would have to say my foundation because it’s what you build the entire face on, and if that doesn’t look spot on the rest will have a hard time falling into place. It’s just like a house right?

What is your biggest piece of advice for brides regarding their make-up?

Start prepping your skin well in advance. Talk to a dermatologist about any problem areas you want fixed. Start, or stick to a face cleaning regimen every day and drink a lot of water. Just taking care of your skin by moisturizing and using sunscreen on a daily basis will be a great step in the right direction. Like I said before the skin on your face is the foundation of your makeup…It’s a bit hard to hide if it doesn’t look quite right :)

What should every bride have with her on the wedding day for touch ups?

The lipstick and or gloss you used, and a good mattifying powder to keep everything in place and cover up shine when needed.

What are your make-up packages for weddings?

I have three packages and all include a trial, where I meet with you and discuss what you’re looking to achieve so you can see what it will look like and make changes if needed. The three packages are, a bride only package, a bride and up to three bridesmaids, and the entire female wedding party.  And if you’d like for me to stick around for touch ups, that can also be arranged.  One thing that sets my services apart from getting your make-up done at a salon or a makeup counter, is that I will be on location meaning you have one less place to go on an already busy day.  Feel free to contact me or check out my website for prices.

Will you travel?

Yes I have a travel radius up to 50 miles free of charge. Anything beyond that I am willing to do, but for a travel fee.
