I love meeting new vendors! A few months ago I had the pleasure of meeting Christen Davis Venn, owner of Dragon Flower Design. She is so kind and is incredibly talented! Today we are sharing a brief interview with Christen about her business and her advice for brides!
How long have you been doing wedding flowers?
I have worked with wedding flowers for sixteen years.
What training/experience do you have?
I studied horticulture in college. I started working at a flower shop in San Francisco and fell in love. I have worked with amazing floral designers over the years. They are some of the best teachers and have taught me so much!
What are some common mistakes you see brides make with their wedding flowers?
Sometimes brides worry to much about the little things that they will not notice on their wedding day. It is important to find a florist that you like and trust. On your wedding day, you should be able to focus your energy on having a good time, not worrying about all the details.
What is your advice for helping brides choose the right flowers?
Choose some flowers that you like and a color palette you want to work with. Try not to over think it. Trust your floral designer with the details. It is also important to have a budget in mind.
What are some floral trends for 2013?
The vintage look is still in. I have been seeing lots of pale pinks and coral with light blue. Lush and elegant garden flowersin all kinds of cool containers are always in. I have had several requests for floral hair accessories. I have been seeing them everywhere. Some brides are asking for some bling with their flowers, like feathers, vintage broaches, and crystal embellishment.
Do you offer consultations? How does it help brides?
I offer free consultations. It’s a great way to make fast progress. It’s important that you connect with your florist and can trust them to make your vision come to life. After meeting with a bride and going over her budget and ideas, it makes it easy to come up with a design and an estimate.
What is your price range?
I work with most price ranges. I prefer to do all of the floral designing, because it creates a cohesive look. I will also just design the wedding personals: bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages, etc. Some brides like to have family or friends do their center pieces and I am happy to help with the rest.
Do you deliver?
I do deliver. It is important to me that I am there to make sure everything looks just right.
What do you think makes your floral designs unique?
I definitely think outside of the box. I like using all kinds of floral and plant materials to come up with something exquisite and unique.
