I would consider myself a fairly private person. I once paid a shredding truck to make a house call so I could personally witness a garbage bag full of old diaries being destroyed. I remember the shredder technician looking sideways at me as I stood next to the truck watching years of my carefully documented life being obliterated. “What the heck did you write in those anyway?” he asked me hesitantly. “I guess you’ll never know,” I said over my shoulder as I walked back up to my house. On the contrary I’m about to tell you something quite personal, something my own family advised me against, something most women would never admit much less write about using their real name (in the future I am considering a pen name, something discreet like Miley Kardashian). Here goes nothing, I get botox and I absolutely LOVE it!
In case you don’t watch Real Housewives botox is essentially injectable used to smooth wrinkles.
Here’s the back story….
I first began seeing Dr. Gwyn and her talented staff at Spokane’s Rejuvenate Rx a couple years ago for micro peels, dermaplaning and cryotherapy (read about my experience with all those service HERE!) Botox wasn’t even on my radar until Kimberly (clinical director and aesthetician extraordinaire) insisted I enter a drawing at their last open house. Lo and behold I won a little bo! I remember in that moment a woman shouting “she doesn’t even need it!” and to be honest I felt a little embarrassed. I remember asking Dr. Gwyn if it was a ridiculous thing to get botox at just 29-years-old (for the record I’m 30 now). Turns out, it wasn’t ridiculous at all and it can actually save you face (literally) down the road.

Dr. Gwyn of Rejuvenate Rx:
“Women in their mid to late twenties are using Botox to head off wrinkles earlier than one might expect and here’s why: If you are very expressive you will develop creasing in your face earlier than those whose faces remain more placid. Strategically placed Botox will relax those muscles, making it much more difficult to make the deep creases and will also get you out of the habit of scrunching up your muscles, so you tend to make those expressions less even when the Botox has worn off.”
For me, this idea of “preventive botox” is very exciting news. The way I see it I can avoid wasting money on the lackluster results of virtually every wrinkle cream on the market and, let’s get down to brass tacks, look more youthful, fresh and vibrant. I’m trying to avoid saying younger but it just sounds like I looked up synonyms for “young” and typed them all out (because I did). For some reason it’s difficult for me to admit that yes I do want to look younger. It makes me feel like I’m not valuing the 30 year journey that has led me to this place and time, sitting in my office at 1:30 am wondering if I am the most desperately vain person alive. The truth is that may be true, but I think I can still honor my age and do what feels right for me. It’s ironic that writing about cosmetic procedures brings out the depth in me.
I’ll give you a little run through of my maiden botox experience. First, I sat down with a Dr. Gwyn with a steaming mug of Rejuvenate Rx’s signature sweet and spicy tea and went over all my questions and concerns while Dr. Gwyn explained the treatment. Next, Dr. Gwyn had me hold a mirror up to my face and point out my areas of concern. In my case there were a few: some crows feet around the eyes, a couple wrinkles starting to form on my forehead and a problem that has plagued me my whole life, hooded eyes (when the lid of the eye creates a hood over the eye making it appear partly closed). Dr. Gwyn explained how she would treat the different areas of my face and I signed some paper work. I was actually surprised by how quick and simple the treatment was. Dr. Gwyn sanitized the different points on my face she planned to inject, made the injections (not nearly as bad as a bikini wax, but slightly more painful than wearing four inch stilettos) and I was on my way!
Bye Bye crows feet!
About four or five days after my treatment, I caught myself in a mirror, no makeup, past midnight and I let out a kind of yelp (like when you find J Brand jeans at TJ Maxx for 60% off) I could not believe how refreshed I looked! It wasn’t a dramatic change, I still looked like me, but like the me that never stayed up until 3am watching YouTube beauty videos, the me that wore sunscreen everyday, the me that looks a whole lot more like the person I feel like on the inside, “Forever Young” in the words of Rod Stewart.
I’ve had a great experience with botox which is why I wanted to share it with you, but as with any invasive procedure I encourage you to do your own research and heed these words of advice from Dr. Gwyn.
Dr. Gwyn of Rejuvenate Rx:
“Before you jump into Botox, have a consultation with the provider. Make sure the injector’s style is consistent with the results that you want from your Botox treatment.” If you aren’t ready to consider Botox, you should schedule a consultation with a skincare professional for a good anti-aging skincare regimen which should always include a great antioxidant and sun protection.”
PS It kiiiilllllssss me that I don’t have a before and after pic! Next time (;
