It makes us so happy when local vendors promote each other, especially when they are two of Featured Vendors! Don Barrington Photography recently went and visited Christen with Dragon Flower Design’s new show in Vanhoff’s Garden Center in Coeur d’Alene. They interviewed this talented lady and snapped some lovely shots of her in her new space. Be sure to go visit her soon!
When we first arrived to Spokane, early February, we reached out to Christen at Dragon Flower Design to see if she would be interested in collaborating on a styled shoot. We loved her magical floral arrangements and modern aesthetics that we were delighted when she contacted us back, excited to be a part it. From that point on we have stayed in touch, and recently, Christen has moved her floral business to Vanhoff’s Garden Center
How did you start as a florist and how long have you been doing it?
I worked in a flower shop in San Francisco and fell in love with it. I told my Grandfather that I was dropping out of college to do flowers. He supported me and I got to work with a lot of talented people in San Francisco. I had a small flower shop in downtown Oakland for a few years, but my husband and I decided it was time to move. I’ve been here in Coeur d’Alene for the last 8 years working as a florist, but it’s only been the last 3 years that I’ve taken it up full-time. I mainly do weddings and events but now I’ll be a full service florist. I’ve been a florist for almost 20 years now.
Tell us about your flowers.
I try to buy local or farm grown as much as possible. I buy from Skyline Flower Growers in Spokane. Their main source is their flower farm in California. It’s been in the family for three generations. I will also be buying flowers from Beehaven, which is local and also family owned. It’s a positive trend right now, sourced flowers straight from the farm. It’s important for so many reasons. That’s another reason I love Vanhoff’s Garden Center. They are family owned and have local greenhouses where they grow lots of their plants.
Why did you become a florist?
I love flowers. That’s the only thing I know a lot about.
Tell us about your new shop.
Vanhoff’s Garden Center has been my happy place for the last three years. So when I was looking for a space and I talked with the owners they were up for it. It was a perfect fit.
Why Coeur d’Alene?
I love it here and it’s so beautiful. I’ve lived here for the last 8 years, and for weddings it’s a great area for a floral shop.
What is your vision for your new location?
The center is talking about extending their hours this year and that is my plan to. I’m planning on being here for a long time. I don’t see myself going anywhere else.
What are you most passionate about as a florist?
Making people happy.
What would you like to see changed in the wedding industry?
I’d like the look to change. I love the rustic, vintage look, but its been around for a long time. I would like to see brides trying different flowers, different looks, more modern, more edgy, stepping out of the box.
What would you do if a bride gave you full creative expression?
I would give them lots of texture, fragrance, and color!
What is your favorite type of flower?
Any type of bulb flowers, but Narcissuses are my favorite.
