A lot of couples think that finding a good officiant will be easy, but let me tell you, it’s not! Finding someone who takes your ceremony as seriously as you do is a tough task. Ricki of Serendipity Spokane is a professional officiant who is just that, someone who crafts personal ceremonies for couples professionally. She has experience and thoughtfully works with each couple to create the wedding that will be best for them. Here is an interview to learn more.
How long have you been in officiating weddings?
Officially 22 years. I started out in 1991 as a coordinator for a little church in Kent, Washington. I became ordained in 1993.
Do you offer other services?
Yes, I also work as a wedding planner and coordinator. I prefer to work with couples that have a basic idea of what kind of ceremony and reception they envision, and then we work as a team to create the wedding that fulfills their vision and works within their budget.
What types of ceremonies do you specialize in?
This is a hard question to answer. I have done Hindu, Buddhist, Karma, Earth, non-denominational, Jewish/Irish Catholic, same sex and traditional ceremonies.
What makes your service unique?
I don’t see what I do as a job. It is an honor to be standing with two people as they look into each others eyes and vow to commit their lives to each other. This is not something I take lightly. I don’t work like a lot of officiants. It may be because I started out as a coordinator. Every couple has their own love story. It is my job to bring it to light. I have so many ceremonies to choose from, but in the end, I want the ceremony to be uniquely theirs. I give each couple a calendar/timeline to help with the day to day planning of their wedding.I give reception guidelines. If requested, I help with the receiving line I give the couple a check sheet that helps keep track of guests invited, invitations sent, RSVPs, gifts received, and thank you cards. I can recommend venues and vendors. I often make the calls to see who is available I stage the ceremony, conduct the rehearsal, work with the DJ/musicians as well as the photographer, to make sure we are all on the same page, I cue the wedding party, and the music. I try to arrive between 45 minutes to an hour prior to the ceremony so I can help with any last minute issues. I also have an amp with bluetooth capacity that the couple is welcome to use for the ceremony
Do you create custom vows?
Yes, and there is no additional charge to rewrite the ceremony. as I want it to be uniquely theirs. That being said, I usually have a limit as to how many times I will rewrite the vows, 3-4 times? Not a problem. 10 times? A little much.
What is your pricing?
I have two main prices.
For a fee of $205.00 I will travel up to 40 miles in each direction and I offer all services listed above. (Additional mileage fee to travel over 40 miles in each direction). If you are looking at an elopement, my fee is $100.00. Again this is traveling up to 40 miles in each direction. This means there is no rehearsal, there are only 2 people standing up with you. A limit of 20 guests, The couple will still have their choice of ceremonies, or may write their own vows.
What is your favorite part of working with couples?
How much time do you have? I am truly the luckiest person in the world! I get to work with people that are in love. AND I AM GIVEN THE INCREDIBLE HONOR OF SHARING THIS TIME WITH THEM. I have made lasting friendships with many of my couples. I know how quickly happy and excited can become overwhelmed and stressed. My job is to decrease your stress. When the work has been done, the couple is married, and I know that I did a good job, I feel like I am floating on a cloud. How amazing is it to be invited to play a part in bringing someone’s love story to light?
