Wedding photography is no joke. It’s arguably one of the most high pressure vendor jobs in the wedding industry, because it’s not like you can do it over if the photos don’t turn out! If you’ve ever wondered how exactly photographers make sure they get it right, and work within their style that you love so much, this post is for you. Don And Julia Photography are sharing their approach to wedding photography, and a little insight into the industry.
We see trends come and go when it comes to wedding photography. It used to be the classic, posed look that was all the rage in the 90’s.
At the turn of the century, styles shifted towards a photojournalistic approach, appreciating the subtle candid moments. Fast forward to today where now we are starting to see a mix of both candid and posed.
One of our favorite parts at a wedding is the portraits of the couple. It’s a must that, during this time together we are able to communicate with our couples. Without clear communication, we are unable to help our couples pose together without making it look forced. If we know our couples and how they interact with each other, our portraits become happy, un-posed moments.
For the rest of the wedding, we are documentarians, observers of objects animate and inanimate. We look for emotional nuances in people’s expressions, paying close attention to where light fills spaces.

This is where our past experience in shooting hundreds of weddings, comes into play. The importance of knowing how to compose a well-crafted photograph on the go is why we love wedding photography. Composition, layering, even exposure and accurate sharpness, are all tools we apply to our craft. Predicting when an event will happen is also important when trying to capture a wedding. We are always on our feet documenting the little details to the big moments. Being quick, nimble and always on the move helps us in securing the images we need during the wedding day.
Wedding photography has evolved over the last few decades but the same rules still apply. Couples will always want a photographer who loves capturing moments and is not afraid to document every part of their wedding. Couples want a photographer who is passionate about portraits and knows how to confidently pose while having fun doing it. This is why we, at Don and Julia Photography, love photographing weddings!
