How awesome would it be to hire a photographer for your wedding who just gets it? Our interview with LaYoung Photography includes so many “yaaaas” moments, from taking care of couples who have never hired a photographer before, to making sure couples are relaxed and happy throughout their wedding, to encouraging you to trust your gut… seriously this husband and wife duo go out of their way to make sure everything about your big day is perfect, and it’s a refreshing and comforting take on modern photography.
What makes your photography unique?
What makes us unique is not necessarily our images (although hopefully, you love those too!), but how we approach our business. I am really passionate about making photography approachable for everyday people, because wedding planning is hard and overwhelming sometimes, and it can feel like this giant, confusing, glitter-infested world. Most people have never booked a professional photographer before their wedding, and that is totally OK! It is always my goal to make our photography as user-friendly as possible. We keep our pricing online, fully accessible to anybody so that folks can tell if we’re in line with their budget. We’ve got straightforward contracts and prices and payment plans, and we try our best to make being in front of the camera painless and enjoyable and leave you with really amazing images that capture who you are.
What is included in your packages? What is your price range?
We like to keep ourselves flexible for our clients, so our packages only include the hours of shooting time for the event and the full resolution digital images. We don’t include prints or albums or engagement sessions in our wedding packages, but we do have those items priced separately so that our photography is available to folks with a wide variety of budgets and wedding needs. Our price range for weddings is anywhere from $800 to $2,500.
How would you describe your style?
Natural, classic, and relaxed. We want to make sure our clients look happy, relaxed, and like themselves, with no over dramatic or forced poses. In order to do that, we shoot a photo-journalistic style mixed in with some traditional posing. The same follows for our editing style, we follow a very natural film-based editing for all our work to ensure they look awesome today and also 20 years from now.
What should brides and grooms look for in their photographer?
To be perfectly honest, there are tons of really awesome, talented photographers out there, and they all do things differently. Every photographer has their own eye and sense of what they find beautiful and meaningful, and that is awesome! The best thing you can do as a couple planning their wedding is just look at the photographer’s work. Seriously, look at as much of it as you can find. If you find yourself being excited and moved by their images, if you can imagine yourself in their photos, then there’s a good chance that you’ll really really love the images they make for you. If you only like some of their work, or you’re just booking the photographer because they’re affordable or because they’re the “cool” photographer or because your mom likes them or whatever and not because you *love* their work, you’ll probably wish you had gone with your gut.
Any tips or advice for wedding planning?
I know a lot of couples who have photography as a relatively small part of their budget, and folks are hesitant to spend on a photographer what they would spend on a dress or a venue or a caterer. But here’s what I genuinely believe: spend more on the photographer than all those Pinterest wedding budgets tell you to. Make it one of the biggest parts of your budget! I’m being totally serious, and I don’t just say this as a photographer, but also as someone who really loves weddings. You’ve put *tons* and *tons* of effort and planning into this crazy awesome party; you have all these people who love you all in one place for one day. So get good photos of it! Invest in the one thing that will help you remember this fantastic shindig in 25 years! I’ve never met someone who has told me, “Man, I wish I spent less on my wedding photographer, I really regret it.” Ever.
