Responsibilities As The Father Of The Bride

 April 8, 2016

When you’re the father of the bride, you have a lot of responsibilities. It’s your little girl’s big day, and you’re going to be giving her away to another man. That’s kind of a big deal! Your little girl, who has been with you through thick and thin, now has another man in her life. Still, you’re not off the hook yet– not that you want to be!

In days gone by, you’d have been expected to foot the bill for the whole shebang. Well, thank goodness times have changed, huh? Of course, for those with loads of cash, it’s not a problem, but let’s get real. These days, not many of us get married at 17 with a dowry to consider. By the time most people get married in 2016, they’re already living together and may even have kids of their own. The cost of living is not what it once was. Even more, women have a lot more say in their nuptials nowadays, and rightly so! Everything at a wedding – from having a best man to the tossing of the bouquet has meaning rooted deep in tradition. One of the other most daunting things about your daughter getting married is the customary father of the bride speech. If you’re not comfortable with public speaking, then you might find yourself feeling nervous about the big day. There’s no need to panic, so don’t worry. Or at least, try not to! Even if you were to stutter and stammer and trip over your lines, it doesn’t matter. You are amongst friends and family. These days, particularly when children have moved further afield, it’s not uncommon for this to be the case. They’re all rooting for you, though, so please don’t worry. You also might find that you’re out of your comfort zone dressed in unfamiliar clothing. Yes, a tailored wedding suit can be restrictive if you are more of a jeans and T shirt kind of guy, but, you’re worrying over nothing. In fact, if you tend to dress in more casual gear then you might be surprised at the reaction you get!

There’s something very attractive about a well dressed man, especially if it’s not his normal look. Make sure you’ve had a haircut, and if you’ve got facial hair, make sure you’re well groomed. Anyone can handle an outfit they’re not used to for one day, right? If you and your daughters mother are no longer together, you may feel a little awkward about being thrown together on such a big occasion. Even if these days you’re pretty amicable, emotions can run high at family events. Most people can be mature adults about things, so you shouldn’t worry. If you’re with your current partner, if they know anything about wedding etiquette, then they know they take a back seat on such occasions.

Whatever you do, don’t drink too much! It may be tempting to have a few for Dutch courage. This is a slippery slope. Do enjoy yourself, but bear in mind it’s your daughter’s big day. Most important of all, know that you’re there to support, love and cheer on your daughter and her new spouse, whatever that looks like for you. So enjoy their day and marvel at how stunning she looks in that dress!
