You paid a ton of money for professional wedding pictures. Everyone will be looking at you ALL DAY. You want to feel like a princess. So, professional hair and makeup is a must, right? We hear you— you’re really good at your own makeup, though. You’ve watched all the YouTube tutorials. However, do you know what you need to do differently for HD pictures? How can you make your makeup last all day in the July heat? If you’re starting to doubt your blending and contouring talents, look no further. Samantha, owner of SJL Artistry, says, “Makeup and hair are sometimes placed on the back burner while wedding planning. To insure an amazing artist you need to book sooner rather than later, and do your research. Look at websites, social media and chat with artists to ensure you’re finding the perfect fit.” So what should you know before hiring a hair and makeup artist for your wedding? Some industry experts are laying it out for us!
First, check out portfolios of local artists. Are you noticing a trend of doing your research when it comes to hiring wedding vendors? Websites, Instagram and Facebook accounts are all good places to check out an artist’s work to see if you like their style— one size does not fit all! Once you find someone you like, central Washington artist Anais Valdez Makeup recommends starting with the basic questions. “It’s important to know if she falls within your budget. It would be a waste of time to book & schedule without knowing the price before hand, so never be nervous about asking what her rates are.
Secondly, ask about on-site fees. Most MUAs and stylists travel to their bridal party but because traveling costs time and money, there is almost always a fee.” If you’re not sure what type of makeup would be best for you, then your artist should be able to help you decide.
There’s lots of options, and your artist should be able to help you understand what would look best, especially if you don’t typically wear a lot of makeup. Airbrush or traditional? False lashes or extensions? Spray tan or powder bronzer? Your hair and makeup artist should be able to educate you on these options and help you decide what you feel most comfortable with.
Speaking of comfortable, pre-trails are a must! The Make Up Studio in Spokane says to always ask if one is included. “Double check to see if the preview/run-through appointment for the makeup is included in the price. Plan on booking your makeup artist six months in advance – if possible. This way, we’re able to offer you the best appointment time possible!”
Lastly, know that your artist should enhance and highlight your best features— not make you feel untrue to yourself and too ‘made up’, if that isn’t your thing. Looking your best means something different for everyone, so find something that you mesh with well and who’s work you love. You’ll love what comes of it!
