Why You Should Definitely Do Engagement Photos

Our production assistant, Patrice, is recently engaged and taking you along on her wedding planning journey. Check back every other Monday for more real-life wedding planning insights

People have a lot of different opinions about engagement photos, leaving many couples to ponder, to do or not to do? I always knew I wanted to do an engagement session, although I couldn’t really say why. Probably because it was “the thing to do.” However, on the tails of our own engagement session, I am here to tell you that you should DEFINITELY do engagement photos, and for some actual great reasons.

1. It helps you get more comfortable in front of the camera prior to the big day.
Most people have either never had professional photos taken, or maybe only a handful of times in a much more relaxed setting; senior photos, family photos, etc. My fiancee and I had never done anything like this and I can tell you we were completely out of our comfort zone at first!

Our photographer, Lisa Wise, was so great about customizing the process to us. During our initial meeting she got to know us as a couple and our experience in front of a camera. Because we had no experience, she was able to give us a lot of direction and made the whole session feel fun and comfortable.

Now as we think about our wedding day, we have one less thing to worry about! Not only do we feel so comfortable with our photographer, we know which poses work best for us and we’ll easily be able to fall right back into our most photogenic selves.

2. It’s a great opportunity to get to know your photographer. There are few people that you will spend more time with on your wedding day than your photographer. An engagement session is the perfect opportunity to get to know each other! During our shoot with Lisa Wise Photography, we were able to chat and get really comfortable. We are now looking forward to our wedding day even more knowing we’ll have a great photographer by our side!

3. It brings you closer to your spouse-to-be.
There aren’t very many instances where you are posed face to face with your sweetie in front of a near-stranger. A great photographer is going to know exactly which poses are going to best highlight the love you have for each other – and let me tell you – it definitely reminds YOU of the love you have for each other too! When we left our engagement session, we felt so much closer and even re-kindled some of those “falling in love butterflies.”

4. It captures this incredibly special and hectic season of your life.
Engagements are such a whirlwind, it can be easy to forget the actual reason for all the hustle and bustle! Our engagement session allowed us to slow down, be present in the moment, and remember why we wanted to marry each other in the first place.
